Watching the rich and famous take fall after fall, you'd think we'd be grateful we'll never suffer such a fate. But, as you watch the train wrecks of the rich and famous, you start putting yourself in their position. Why on Earth would you risk everything when all you have to do is keep being successful doing what got you there in the first place? Just keep a low profile, and keep your nose clean. Apparently, much much easier said than done.
The flaw in this reasoning is simple: you're not them. You're not in their shoes. You don't have the world looking down your throat 24/7 waiting for you to disintegrate so they can sell leaked photos and secret videos of you and your despicable goings-on.
Yet, we still wish we were them. We'd jump at the opportunity to enjoy such undeserved adulation and a bank account the size of Manhattan. What about the women (or men) who would suddenly be fighting over us? And, all that preferential treatment. It must be fun to don a disguise so that nobody recognizes you when you dare go out in public Things Money Can't Buy.
And of course, you could be the star champion of your favorite noble causes, jetting anywhere whenever you felt like it. You'd never cook another meal, clean a thing, or worry about the mundane. How could anyone become sick of that scenario?
Well, plenty must get weary of it. They've nowhere else to turn when boredom strikes. They're somewhat like prisoners of their own runaway success. Everybody wants a piece of them and there's only so much to go around. About all that's left is to get yourself in a little trouble, which in these times can magnify exponentially thanks to the viral nature of our society.
So, would you trade places with one of these "lucky" folks? Not like you're being offered the chance, but you know as well as I do, it has crossed your mind more than a few times. Even though you want to believe with every molecule of your being that money can not buy happiness, it's like we won't truly believe it until we've seen it with our own two eyes. And, once it happens, there's no turning back.
If you had all the money in the world, would all your problems suddenly go away? Or, would you just be trading some of them in for brand new ones? It's all such a silly mind game that we play as if it will ever happen in our lifetimes. Of course it won't. This is the stuff of a child's imagination not intended for grown-ups.
